Meet the New R2 CADY — JJRC’s First Ever Robot Toy

Not satisfied with just producing conventional RC toys, JJRC has decided to give it a try at making humanoid robot toys. Its latest release — the R2 CADY is a UBTECH Alpha 2-inspired humanoid robot that costs less than $100 shipped. In fact, the R2 costs just $25 which puts it well within reach of most consumers.

Considering that the R2 is an entry-level toy robot, it doesn’t exactly have the same advanced features that the Alpha 2 has. ¬†For instance, it does not have advanced speech and movement features and it can’t connect via WiFi to control home devices such as security alarms and lights.

Product Highlights
  • Gesture sensor
  • Singing and dancing features (with built-in speaker)
  • 26.5 x 16 x 9cm overall size
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • Walking movements in four directions (forward, backward, right and left)
  • IR remote control
  • LED eye lights
  • 3.7V 600mAh Li Po battery
  • Charging time: 120 minutes (with USB charging cable)
  • Operating time: approx. 60 minutes
  • Weight: 348g

It can, however, perform simple humanoid movements such as walking in all four directions (forward, backward, right and left), perform some simple dance moves and sing or play music. It even has obstacle avoidance that helps prevent it from walking into objects such as walls or furniture.

It’s also impressive that for a toy that costs less than $30, it can also respond to hand gestures. You can make the R2 turn left or right and walk forward or backward simply by waving your hand in front of it. Designing humanoid robots that can walk properly without tripping is a very tricky thing and to make the R2 more stable in its movement, its legs have built-in skater rollers which is supposed to help in improving stability and reducing the chances of slipping when performing complex movements such as turns.

Being a basic toy robot, the R2 is not autonomous and needs a user to control it in order for perform any task. To control the R2, an infrared remote, similar to what you’d use to control your TV set or air-conditioner, is provided.

The JJRC R2 CADY is currently available at CAFAGO for just $24.41 shipped. It is available in blue (R2 CADY WIDA) or pink (R2 CADY WINI).
